fabulous thriller March 21, 2008 12 out of 24 found this review helpful
President James Macpherson is on his way to Los Angeles to give a speech at the Republican National Convention at the Staples Center. His intelligence team killed a terrorist they have been hunting for years but in his computer they find a map of the Staples Center. They think the terrorists are targeting the president but are confident that they have him protected. The Secret Service is proven wrong when container ships launch scud missiles with nuclear warheads at D.C., Seattle, Manhattan, and Southern California killing the president and many others.
Vice President Oaks is now the president and he and his advisors are in a bunker deep underground. He intends to make the country who launched the bombs pay for killing millions of Americans but he has no idea what country it is. North Korea is prepared to invade the South and could have done it as they had the means. The new president of Iraq who makes Saddam Hussein look like a choir boy hates the Americans and is in league with the U.N. Secretary-General. He is prepared to go to war to prevent the Kurdish providence from succeeding and joining the new Kurdistan. Israel builds the Third Temple to the consternation of other nations. It looks like intelligence is needed to figure out who killed America and since the infrastructure is destroyed, the US must depend on its allies and what little intelligence they have from contact with the field.
Joel C. Rosenberg writes a political thriller based on today's headlines and most of the events in DEAD HEAT could conceivably happen. The action is non stop from the very first page and the politicians and elected officials feel lifelike. It is interesting to see what happens when a first strike hits America and how the country reacts to most of its land made wasted. Mr. Rosenberg is fantastic writer whose chilling and exciting novels make him one of the best thriller authors writing today.

A biblical thriller of huge proportions March 28, 2008 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
Several authors have written novels based upon a nuclear attack on the U.S. by terrorists. Most allow the hero to save the day in the last chapter. Only two authors have allowed the attack to succeed and then tell the story of the consequences. Joel Rosenberg is one of them, and he has written a tremendous book, the best of his series. Four American cities are destroyed with nuclear armed short range missiles launched from ships. Something that is entirely possible. I am impressed by the fact that the weapons are depicted correctly. No glaring technical errors that degrade may otherwise good books.
DEAD HEAT is an excellent thriller based on biblical prophecy. Like his other novels, the characters are religious, and much scripture is quoted, however, it is done in a manner that does not offend. The story certainly make one think about the future and religion.
Rosenberg skillfully weaves historical facts and biblical prophecy into a page turning thriller.
I am the other author I mention above. It appears that Rosenberg and I wrote our books concurrently, telling a two different kind of stories based on similar premises. My novels deal with events in a secular manner. In both books: an Islamic Empire with a dictator arises; North Korea looks south for conquest; the government is decapitated; China is a major player with entirely different roles in each book; a whodunit story (who attacked and where did they get the weapons); and America, reeling from the attack, needs a strong leader. Both books are stories of American survival.
Rosenberg includes the third temple, while I saved it for my last book in my Clash of Civilizations trilogy.
I have one advantage over Rosenberg--I have first hand experience with weapons of mass destruction--while he has more direct experience in the Middle East. I can attest that DEAD HEAT is an excellent novel. I highly recommend DEAD HEAT. It is a page turning must read.
Tyndale House Publishing turned down my manuscript for my second novel Behold, an Ashen Horse because it was too similar to a book by one of their authors. At the time I though it was Joel Rosenberg, but could not connect the comment to any of his published books. Now I understand. Well done Joel.
Such Promise April 28, 2008 11 out of 23 found this review helpful
This book started with some great promise - four cities in the United States are hit by nuclear bombs including L.A. where the president was to speak. The ensuing Constitutional confusion is captivating and the reader is swept into the mayhem. Beyond the tragedy, the remaining bits of the US government (Washington, New York and Seattle were also hit) must reform and also defend as well as strike back. There are several possibilities of who the perpetrators are, of course.
However, soon after that great start, two things become apparent.
If the reader has not read the preceding four novels in the series, he is lost. There are frequent references to prior wars and possibly miracles (the prior miracles are never described). The author assumes the reader has read the prior books and akes no explanation for what has gone on which is disappointing since the prior events are so important to understanding teh events and characters in this book. This is not a stand alone novel by any means.
The next apparent feature to the book is that it proselytizes more than the the proverbial Seventh Day Adventist on your front step. Virtually every section with Bennett in it contains Born-again Christian platitudes and attempts to convert friends (it is not explained why he such a "hero" - he does nothing in this book but preach). He is especially intent on this mission since the Bible makes no reference to America - therefore he surmises that America will only play a part in the "rapture" (when Jesus calls all true Christians "home").
Thus, Roseenberg conflates Christian Zionism and the rapture with a nuclear/political thriller. Unless you are into the religious part, this reads like a bad religious tract with some science fiction tossed into the mix. By the middle of the book, the plot loses all semblance to reality. Perhaps his earlier books could be described as "it is possible", but this one is over the top.
It is a shame that the early promise was not carried through. I did not anticipate picking up a religious tract when the book started.
Another Winner From Rosenberg! March 31, 2008 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book picks up with our heros doing work in camps in Jordan after the DDay of Devastation. Jon and Erin have left America and have chosen to do this type of service. In America James McPherson is preparing to make his final speech at the Republican convention being held in Los Angeles. Four boats of Liberian markings shoot nuclear missiles at four American cities. New Yor,Washington D.C.,Seattle, and Los Angeles are leveled by these attacks. President PacPherson is killed when the missiles hit Los Angeles. The dead Americans number in the millions. Vice-President William Oaks becomes the new President. In the neamtime events on the world stage are spiralling out of control. Prime Ministare David Doron is racing to finish the Third Temple. President al-Hassani and Secretary-General of the Unites Nations Salvatore Lucente are secretely trying to establish a new world order. In the meantime the President is trying to find out who shot nuclear missiles at the United States. This book will leave you asking "are the final days here"? This is an excelent book. Be sure to read it.
I want my money back April 7, 2008 10 out of 24 found this review helpful
Terrible book. Not the least bit interesting in terms of detail and plausibility. I suppose if you are interested in biblical prophecy the book might appeal to you as apparently some people liked it. A couple of points really irked me and showed that the author didn't do his homework. The description of the shoot down of the Air Force spy plane was full of errors. A 707 flying at 49,000 feet? Impossible. A Mig 29 climbing at 65,000 feet per SECOND? Ridiculous. This guy is no Tom Clancy, who, by the way, is no good anymore.
