Great non-intimidating beginning sewing book June 22, 2007 22 out of 24 found this review helpful
This book is very approachable for the beginning sewer. Her writing style is very casual and she covers topics from choosing a sewing machine to setting up your sewing workspace to applying bias binding. She talks about the threads tangling in your machine and what to do about it, which happens to every sewer and can really frustrate a beginner.
The projects are good beginning projects- not too complicated, but you can probably find something in the book that you want to make and will actually use. And if your project doesn't turn out perfect, you won't feel like you failed-- the author explains why mistakes are an okay thing.
If you are an experienced sewer, you probably won't see any projects that you haven't seen or tried before. However, reading the first part of the book reinforced some habits I need to follow (changing my sewing machine needle often, pressing often) and gave me some technique ideas that I didn't know. I love her attitude about mistakes-- when to redo, when to take a rest and when to proceed with abandon. (I call it the "burning" stage and she is correct- it usually passes in time.)
A great beginning sewing book. Not as valuable for the experienced sewer, but worth a read for those wanting to build more confidence in their sewing style.
not too outside the box July 5, 2007 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
Simple and lovely projects good for a beginner sewer. The photos are gorgeous as are the fabrics Amy has chosen for the examples. But this book is not really a new way to sew. It includes no revolutionary ideas or projects more unique than what's popular in the "modern" sewing camp. The directions and ideas are mostly clear and straightforward but tend to provide a finished project that is, well, sometimes sloppy. "Homemade" can be well-made, too, not necessarily hastily-finished or simplistic.
Nothing "New" Here July 20, 2007 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
The title is misleading. This is one of many sewing books on the market full of simple home-sewn gift ideas with only a few apparel items.
Still, Ms. Karol does spend some time discussing fabric, notions, and sewing machines.
A fabulous, fun, and BEAUTIFUL book for beginners and pros, alike. June 28, 2007 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I've been waiting for this book for months, and it finally arrived on my doorstep this morning. Wow! What can I say? It's absolutely beautiful. It makes me happy just looking at the cover, and once you open the book you'll discover wonderful eye candy on every page. I've been sewing for quite some time, and I find the book to be very inspiring. Amy makes you think about sewing in a whole new way -- I'm very eager to try her "no pins" method, for instance. And the projects are just so incredibly cute and whimsical. I had to run up to my attic to hunt through my fabric scraps to see what project I could start on right away. You'll find a wide variety of items to choose from -- housewares, handbags, clothing, baby items, and of course, aprons. If you're a fan of Amy's blog, Angry Chicken, then you know Amy has a great sense of style and a whimsical voice, and it all shines through in this fun, fabulous book.
very basic August 13, 2007 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
It is a very basic sewing book and I was a little bit disappointed with the projects in the book. (The cover looks pretty, so I was kind of looking forward to it.) I am not a big fun of the choice of fabrics either. The instructions and drawings are sometimes difficult to understand. Her writing style is good. I like that "French Twist" sewing book better.
