Interesting concept but not very realistic October 22, 2007 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
This book like others of the career self-help genre play on wide spread worker angst and offer some new unconventional advice so the author can make money. Some of the advice is workable, some of it is not. Managing workflow, controlling disruptions, delegating when possible, and the Pareto principle all make sense. This sound advice is mixed in with tidbits such as: Go to a coffee shop and lie down on the floor to relax. Getting fired is preferable to quitting because you can draw unemployment. When you do get fired, you can always sell or rent your house. Leasing a Maseratti made sense because it was only $2,000 a month. Join the hordes selling e-books on the internet.
His lifestyle advice is almost completely unworkable for those who have spouses, children, and mortgages. Spouses and children typically don't want to live like Gypsys, kids have 9 month school years to work around, and the cost and difficulty of travel go up exponentially. Plus if your company finds out you're sending stuff to India you may get fired for leaking confidential information.
For Heartless Corporate-Drones only November 26, 2008 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
I read about this book in an in-flight magazine and thought it very much embodied my view of life: Don't delay your happiness or gratification until retirement. Seize the day and live it up now!
However, I was terribly disappointed. First of all, definitely heed the Warning printed on the back of the book. I didn't even notice the warning until it was too late. But there it was the whole time: "WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU WANT TO QUIT YOUR JOB"
I'm willing to quit my job, but you have to REALLY want to quit your job in order to do what this book says. You also have to have a meaningless job that requires almost ZERO work. I don't keep myself busy with busy-work at my job. I am genuinely busy with PRODUCTIVE, results-oriented work.
I'm a mid-level manager at a large non-profit organization. A lot of my job consists of interviewing children and adults for our programs. This is not something I can out-source to India. The interviews have to be done in-person and I have to follow-up in-person.
Even if I did have a job I could out-source to India, I wouldn't want to. To me, that is rather exploitive of a developing nation's people.
Additionally, one of the suggested methods to becoming part of the "new Rich" seems basically to scam people online. I think BrainQUICKEN (the author's road to riches) is very much a scam.
Finally, the author seems to dismiss seeking a deeper meaning to life. To me, exploiting people in a developing country, being completely lazy, and scamming people out of their money is not ethical and certainly not what I would recommend to anyone!
I'm 28 and I've taken a four-month vacation in Guatemala and Honduras, scuba dived in the Galapagos, completed a study tour in Israel, and spent a month conducting research in Ghana. I've traveled extensively on five continents. And yet I found this book absolutely INFURIATING.
If you are a corporate drone in a totally meaningless and worthless job, and you are free of the burden of any morals and ethics, this book is for you! Everyone else, move along.
A refreshing antidote to the madness of the 9-5 lifestyle April 26, 2007 14 out of 29 found this review helpful
From a personal point of view, I like this book because it validates a lot of my own feelings and beliefs about balancing one's work life and personal life. I think this book touched me because I am already half way along the path he describes. And it was of value to me, because several chapters gave me insights into how I can complete the journey.
I believe it is madness to devote one's adult life to working 9 to 5, and then to think about finding fun and joy in one's life only after retirement.
As with any lifestyle book, you just need to find one page or one sentence that resonates with your own values and ambitions - and that makes the purchase worthwhile.
Ruined my vacation April 26, 2007 14 out of 37 found this review helpful
I'd heard Tim Ferriss' much-discussed presentation at SXSW this year, so I was excited to read his book. I picked it up last week, read it cover-to-cover on vacation, then spent the rest of my trip anxious to get back home so I could put his suggestions in action. Read this book. It's worth every penny.
Like Getting Kicked in the Solar Plexis... April 30, 2007 14 out of 27 found this review helpful
To be frank, I bought Ferriss' book, in part, because I was skeptical. Could it be possible to work only 4-hours every week and still do big things in the world?
Although a number of my colleagues had endorsed it... I questioned the plausibility of the book's message. I even know Ferriss' agent personally and that he only takes on quality authors... still I pre-judged this book.
Boy was I wrong.
I inhaled "The 4-Hour Workweek" in 4 hours this weekend. I feel like I was roused from a deep sleep by a cold bucket of water. And, once I was awake, I was kicked in the solar plexus over and over and over. But I needed this beating.
I write a lot about standing in the service of others as you stand in the service of your destiny. But, apparently, I needed a reminder how what it truly means to serve my destiny.
Tim, not only did your book help me refocus on what is important--why I'm building a remarkable company--but I think your work will have influence on the book that I'm currently writing about how to build a bigger, better business that makes more money while working less. (not the title). Thank you for that.
I wanted to publicly acknowledge your work and to support your message. It might not be for everyone. Many people like to feel busy to feel important. But I'm sure many others would like to join the New Rich and get busy choosing what they do, where they go, and how they live.
Oh, by the way... I've already adopted your email policy. Now, time to re-organize my sales focus based on Pareto's Princple and will teach my staff how to exploit Parkinson's Law.
Bravo!
