5 out of 5 stars The Naked Truth About Beauty   January 11, 2008
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

This book courageously offers truth over the fictional "perfect" body that the media has created. From magazine covers to television, we are constantly bombarded with images of what beauty is supposed to be. This book brings to the light the subjects that are usually kept unmentioned and reminds us that there is no perfection. Every woman of any age has insecurities about her body, especially during the teenage years and Miss Redd candidly speaks about her own insecurities in a way that, much like the photos, is completely open and exposed. She also speaks in a tone that is both honest and fun, whether it's about zits, lumps or bumps we wish never had. Every page in this book is empowering and exudes sincerity. The bottom line, love the body you've got and take care of it intelligently.

Body Drama was the perfect compliment to "Body Esteem, Weight Loss Through Self-Discovery," a book that has been really helping me with my weight loss and self-esteem.

3 out of 5 stars target audience   February 27, 2008

Ok first let me say that this book really is a great book. I found it very informative and written in easily understood language. I would totally recommend this book BUT I think there should be a more specific age range specified. I bought this book for my pre-teen daughter thinking it would be a good resource. I still think it is a good resource but I don't think it is appropriate for pre-teens. I think there are some issues in this book that I am just not ready for my 12 year old to see or read about. I would and will personally hold off on giving this book to my daughter until she is closer to 14 or 15. There are pictures and topics that are better reserved for a more mature audience. If you do think your daughter, niece, etc.. is ready for it I would preview it first! Again, it is a great book but not for a younger audience.

5 out of 5 stars Every woman and especially young woman should have a copy of this book   January 9, 2008

This is such a fabulous book, I want to buy a copy for every 13-18 year old girl in this country. It has pictures of women of all colors and sizes, which is so rare in this restrictive media world we live in. And it provides honest, frank, and even sometimes personalized discussions about things that it is so hard for young women (and women in general!) to ask each other about or to find good information on. It has sections on "shape," "skin," "down there," "boobs," and "hair and nails," with each showing a variety of pictures and talking about various possible problems, worries, or conditions that affect women and their bodies. It's like the "Our Bodies, Our Selves" for a new generation! Thanks so much to Nancy Redd for this, I am immediately sending copies to my teenage girl cousins, and also to a few adult women I know...!

5 out of 5 stars Finally!   January 27, 2008

This book has, honest to God, changed the way I look at my body! At 23, I could honestly say I'd never seen another woman naked before, at least not a real one. Everything we see in movies and in magazines is pretty much either altered to perfection with digital enhancements, or altered to perfection with surgical enhancements. I always thought I somehow wasn't normal under my clothes, until I saw "Body Drama: Real Girls, Real Bodies, Real Issues, Real Answers." Finally, a book has come along that teaches us women to love our bodies and to question just what the word "normal" means, anyway.
In a society where many women are judged on appearances but taught to be embarrassed about bodily functions, Miss America swimsuit winner Nancy Amanda Redd gives us an accurate guide to the female body.
Redd makes it clear that she wants to eradicate the dislike and shame that women have learned to feel about their bodies. She does just that by the use of real, color photographs of women's bodies and correct information about almost every health or body issue a young woman could face.
By using real photographs of real women (no airbrushing and no professional models), Redd both educates and empowers young women. Cartoon drawings that "growing up" books have always used are confusing and inaccurate. When explaining her use of photographs in the introduction, she asks, "How can we expect cartoons to teach us how to take care of ourselves and convince us that our bodies are normal and OK?"
A lot of young women are afraid to ask questions about what they are supposed to look like in private areas, but Redd shows them up close and personally that they are normal and beautiful by showing them what other real people look like.
The book is broken into chapters, each dealing with a different part of the body. Redd covers everything from curing acne to self administered breast exams. She leaves no stone unturned and makes good on her promise to try to change how women view their bodies. She dedicates a section to "Common Poo Problems" and includes a much-needed bra sizing guide with photographs of frequent fitting mistakes.
While a lot of schools are stressing abstinence-only sexual education classes, it might be hard for young women to find reliable information about contraceptives and STIs. Redd dedicates much detail to both of these subjects.
Reading Body Drama feels like talking to a medically educated, well-spoken girlfriend. Redd is serious and funny at the same time. She's honest, too. In her "i confess" segments, she admits to all the issues she's faced with her own body drama. Redd uses her experiences to show that even a beauty queen has body issues.
For young women, it is important to understand that they are not expected to look like the women shown on television and that they are very normal. Body Drama is the perfect guide to all of our body's issues, big or small, because it puts an emphasis on encouraging young women to love their bodies and take care of them.

5 out of 5 stars Mom found answers for teen with Body Drama   January 27, 2008

I purchased this book for my 16 year older that has a lot of questions and frustrations with her own body's drama. This book had all the answers to the uncomfortable questions that she had the real body models in the book helped her with being able to see the issue up close. She read this book and was relieved that she was not alone with body issues such as unwanted hair growth, odor and much more. As a parent, I enjoyed the professionalism and good taste of this book it will serve as a reference book that will be in our library for a long time. Thanks Nancy
