3 out of 5 stars Instead of a trilogy, these should have been 1 GREAT novel.   July 24, 2008

"The Hollow" is the second in the 7 trilogy by Nora Roberts. A continuation from "Blood Brothers", this book finds Layla, Quinn and Cybil even closer friends with Fox, Cal and Gage, and more determined than ever to destroy the evil in their small town of Hawkins Hollow. While Book 1 focused on the growing relationship between Quinn (paranormal writer) and Cal (bowling alley owner), who have a psychic ability and connection, this latest book focused on Layla (the fashion queen) and Fox (the lawyer), both of whose abilities grow stronger as their relationship does. The only two not coupled up yet, but to me seem to be attracted to each other are Cybil (paranormal expert)and Gage (card shark with an attitude). I think that will be the beginning of book 3 which will all culminate in an ending that I am sure we won't soon forget..a showdown between good and evil. As the friends struggle to save the world as we know it, we find out more about their connection to the town and the evil that makes an appearance every 7 years for 7 days. Having now figured out how to reassemble the stone, we know that the end of this war (between good and evil) is near. I will however make a few predictions, the first being obvious: good always wins. The second being that while Gage and Cybil's relationship is going to be important in the last novel, so too will Gage's relationship with his father (hint, everyone else gets along and loves their father, with the exception of Gage...because his father abused him as a kid). And is there possibly a "7th" person in this adventure, maybe even Gage's father? Just guessing. Anyway, I still believe that the problem with this trilogy is that it should have been one great novel. On the other hand, because I am determined to see how this story ends I will read the final book, Pagan Stone, when it is released.

3 out of 5 stars Book two misses.   September 12, 2008

I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts but this novel seemedto be missing something. Was it the lack of a hot and steamy relationship? Was it that it took nearly half the book to finally bring Fox and Layla together? I'm not sure, but I've always been attracted to the way Nora could deliver an exciting romantic romp through a steamy world only she could imagine. Nora Roberts usually writes the best trilogies, yet book two lacks must of what we love about her. Which is a shame since book one offered some very nice promises.

Editor of the highly recommended novel: Fates by Georgiou Tino: Best of 2008

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!   May 15, 2008

I rate Nora Roberts books a little differently that those of other authors. Since her books are so character driven I ask myself, "Do her characters feel like family or my friends?" And for any book I ask, "Did I have a really hard time putting it down?" Yes to both questions in this book. In "Blood Brothers" however it took me 2/3 of the book to even care about anything that was happening. The relationship between Cal and Quinn seemed to lack any depth. So I was wary with her second book. But Roberts was back on track with Layla and Fox. I know some others didn't like this book, but I totally loved it. The suspense was just right for me. I get creaped out with demonic subjects, but this was a tolerable creapy; a fun creapy. The only thing I didn't like was finding out that I have to wait until DECEMBER to read the final book!

4 out of 5 stars More like 4 1/2 stars!   May 19, 2008

I have to say that I definitely loved this book and the only reason I took off half of a star is because as a stand-alone book, it is harder to understand what is going on. Besides that, I thought the characters, especially Fox and Layla, really were fleshed out and you could really feel the angst they were feeling. Not only was the dialogue more realistic, she drew me in with how the characters felt and those feelings were very realistic - how not everyone automatically wants to jump on the "hero" wagon and are reluctant to leave their old lives - it definitely felt real to me.

Another thing is that I loved was the banter between Cybil and Gage - they see the pattern but instead of falling in line like they think they have to or are "fated" to, they are trying to create their own path. I wish there were more scenes with them together, but I guess that's what the next book is for.

For those who are so over the paranormal stuff, this is going to be a stretch to read, but for those who liked the Three Sisters and the Key trilogies, I think you'll like this one!

I highly enjoyed Fox and Layla's story and cannot wait to read about Cybil and Gage!

5 out of 5 stars So, So Good   May 20, 2008

I should probably feel bad that I ignored my husband and children for seven straight hours while I read THE HOLLOW, the second book in Nora Roberts' THE SIGN OF SEVEN trilogy.

I don't.

Seriously, once you start in on this story, featuring Fox O'Dell and Layla Darnell, which is even better than the first book, you won't be able to stop reading. Of course, I'll no doubt say that the third book in the series, which doesn't come out until December (the horror!!), is even better than this one, but I'll deal with that when it happens.

Fox, Cal, Gage, Layla, Quinn, and Cybil are all back, all working to prepare themselves to destroy the demon that will be coming to do his dirty work during The Seven (see first book for definitions, as I'm not going to tell you!). There's more evil, more horror, and more information learned this time around. Basically, it's the first book amped up a bit.

Trust me, you want to read THE HOLLOW. You want to ignore your husband and children for a few hours. You want to scream when you realize you're not going to get the rest of the story for seven more loooong months.
