Loved it, but......................************Spoiler************* May 13, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I don't know if Ms Roberts had time to make changes in Book 2 of the trilogy after so many bad customer reviews. Whatever the reason, I enjoyed this book.
I have to mention this, though many of the other readers would disagree with me. Fox donating sperm to his sister's partner? Ewwwwwwwwwwww! I would have said the same thing if he donated to his brother's wife. The relationship is the same.
A sagging middle, needs some support May 14, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is definitely NOT a stand-alone book. Usually, Roberts can handle a trilogy so that each book can function on its own, but not this time. The beginning is filled with loose ends, and lacks enough information on the supporting cast to bring the reader, new or continuing, up to date. The middle is a long talk-fest with very little action. Even the ending is not worth the cover price. I have all of Nora's books, and sometimes she's really brilliant, but The Sign of Seven is completely unworthy of her talents. The best I can say is that I liked Fox, but the rest of the crew were largely shadows of previous heroes and heroines. I think this could have been crafted much more successfully as a single book, like her "Three Fates". There isn't enough substance to justify a trilogy. In fact, I am a little resentful at having to purchase three books for a story that could have been told in one.
Disappointing Bridge May 27, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I enjoyed the first book, but this one was a disappointing bridge to the 3rd book.
The main flaw was the character Layla. Goodness, what a whiny, horrid character. I don't even get why Fox was so into her, all she did was p and moan thru the whole book. I wanted to trottle her by the end.
Gage and Cybil are the most intriging characters so I have hopes for the last book.
TRULY HOLLOW! June 5, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We are long time fans of Nora's work. A new entry from her is a reason to buy a book, an intellectual, emotional and sometimes spiritual generator. Imagine our excitement when The Sign of Seven Trilogy hit the shelves. The plot in Blood Brothers had left us a little flat, but surely the plot would quicken and the characters would rise in The Hollow. Alas. We've been to The Hollow and it is only that. The formulaic writing, vapid characters and uninspired prose left us wanting - no more. We won't be helping ourselves to a third serving.
Well.... July 8, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
...where to start? As a longtime Nora Robert's fan, I have been disappointed in the steady decline of the books she has been putting out. I did read Blood Brothers, and while I found it ridiculous, I am compelled to finish a series and so I read The Hollow. I wouldn't have thought it could be worse that Blood Brothers, but wow was I wrong. To begin with Layla is a simpering idiot, and that's being kind. More importantly, the diaglogue. I'm not even sure that schmaltzy is a real word, but it fits perfectly here. Who talks like that? I don't know anybody as "in tune" with themselves and each other as these people.
This is all supposing you're ok with the theme of the series, being demons and guardians and the like. I'm ok with a little "pschic" story line here and there, but we're entering science fiction here.
I'm ashamed to say that I will be reading the 3rd book when it's available, and I can only hope that it will be slightly less cheesey than the others.
