A New Favorite September 11, 2008 I'm not one to rah-rah every new book that comes out by the latest author - in fact, I nose through their books with great skepticism and often find them utterly lacking.
So I was pleasantly surprised at 4:30am this morning when I turned the last page and looked up to see if it was time to go to bed yet. The book had wrapped me up in the heart-racing intrigue and made me feel personally invested in the characters. I couldn't put the book down long enough to look at the clock, even when my eyes began to swim and the words on the page were no longer completely in focus. I had to know the ending! It's been a long time since a modern book has drawn me in so completely.
Meyer describes her book as science fiction for those who don't like science fiction. The basic premise involves aliens who think themselves benign doing the unthinkable and taking over human bodies, suffocating the surviving consciousness. What hope is there and why read a book that begins after the humans have already lost the war? It's a fascinating journey that keeps your mind on its toes.
My only complaint is the amount of space it takes up on my shelf. I would love to have a hardback copy with smaller font and less space between the lines - it would also make skipping over some of the drawn out scenes a little easier. I will point out, however, that the "filler" is what grounds this imaginative book in a greater sense realty. What a character does during periods of waiting says just as much as their performance during times of stress.
My Soul... September 12, 2008 This book was simply amazing. I'm no good at reviewing things, other than to suggest anybody reading this buy the book now. If you've read Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga books, you'll like this too. She is simply the most amazing author I have ever read. I will buy every book she ever releases. She can write exactly what it feels like to fall in love and exactly what it feels like to have a broken heart. Once you read one of her books you will want to read the rest of them as well. I think that The Host, as well as the Twilight Saga, would be good books for anybody ages 12 and up, especially females.
The Host September 12, 2008 I thought this book was amazing. Since I am not a SciFi reader as a rule Iwas caught up in the story immediatly and could not put it down. It was just a wonderful story. Sorry for the mistakes on this review. I am still getting used to my Kindle.
Agood beginning September 15, 2008 I liked the book. I didn't think it was THE NOVEL of the century but I liked it for what it was - entertainment. Like the Twilight series, this was easy reading, nothing to read into, nothing Earth shattering (and if we look to this type of writing for insight into the human condition, then , well, we need to do something else with our lives).
healthy addiction September 15, 2008 I deeply enjoyed reading the host. The love feelings were purely human. The love triangle had me confused on who i wanted for Wanda, Melanie and who i wanted to bestow my feelings. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed Meyers writing style in Twilight, had the same addicting effect but I must admit with sanity.
