Gorey should not be downsized October 30, 2001 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This glorious book by Edward Gorey has always been a favorite and a favorite gift. However, this edition earns only 3 stars--5 for Gorey and 1 for the publisher. This edition has been reduced to an unfortunate size, and loses much of its charm and wonderful, absorbing detail.

Gorey is brilliant as usual with this absurd tale of a creature who inexplicably shows up on a family's doorstep and moves in, only to spend most of his time licking the walls. Classic stuff.
A nameless creature arrives at a Victorian household. September 23, 1999 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is very light compared to most Edward Goreys. The creature is so funny, especialy when he puts on that innocent look that my dog puts on when she's down something bad. The family pretends to want to get rid of this animal while they really probally like the change from their boring, Victorian lives. I treasure this book as much as a picture I have of Edward Gorey with a Doubtful Guest stuffed animal.
This was a simple but still comical story. January 18, 1999 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been a long time admirer of Goreys' artwork, but when I recieved this book I became a fan of his literature too. The drawings can only add to the mystery surrounding this strange guest, and although the plotline isn't very complex, I thought that this was the most enjoyable story I had read in years. I hope to have all of his books someday.
One of my favorite Gorey tales.... December 29, 2001 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
A delightful classic with quirkiness that warms my heart.
