I laughed, I cried. And then I finally got it unwrapped. July 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's an okay album. Nothing brilliant here. Surprisingly (to me, anyway) the music is consistently better than the spoken-word comedy, which strays from the usual Red State Update format and suffers for it. These guys are great when discussing Obama's flag pin, but talking about selling trash at a yard sale? I'd say none of the spoken bits are above the level of a slightly below-average Red State Update video. The boys are just out of their element in these skits, I feel.
As I said, with perhaps the exception of "Noodles...", the music is good here. Sgt. Pepper it is not, but the songs are enjoyable, funny, and well-performed. I wouldn't be surprised to hear a couple of these songs ("If I Was You" particularly) on my local country radio station.
All in all, I'd say if you enjoy the Red State Update boys, this CD is worth it, if only as a way of giving something back to they who have given us so many laughs over the years.
PS - I agree with Dunlap. I hate McMinnville too.
Great First Effort! July 31, 2008 Take a little "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" and add a BIG dollop of political, cultural, and red neck satire, and you've got "How Freedom Sounds!"
Red State Update is an equal-opportunity skewer of any- and everything.
Each time I've listened to the CD, I've found something new to laugh at. "Jackie For President" and "Jackie's Momma" had me laughing until I had tears in my eyes. There songs were surprisingly good. I say "surprisingly" since I'd mostly been acquainted with their video comedy skits online.
RSU's humor is not for everyone--but almost! Uhhhh, late-night TV talent bookers: Are you listening?
This is funny August 26, 2008 it's good to listen to some great humourous political stuff that has no hint of viciousness. These guys are great. (hope this helps me win Jackie's truck)
I haven't laughed so hard in months... Like a pair of Redneck Dennis Millers... October 16, 2008 I listened to these guys after downloading from Rhapsody.com, and I gotta say that its worth it to buy this album. Unlike one of the other reviewers, for me the music was more of a distraction to the comedy bits. The stuff on Talledega, Jackie's Mom, Impressions and etc had me laughing so hard while driving that I nearly crashed my car.
I come from Central Illinois, and as the son of a Tavern owner, I can say I've sat next to guys at the bar that are EXACTLY LIKE Jackie and Dunlap, but not nearly as witty. Dunlap's description of Talledage as being like a certain movie by a certain country singer just slayed me. Keep it up guys!
Jackie & Dunlap Strike Again! November 3, 2008 The Red State boys, Jackie Broyles and Dunlap, have scored again!
Their brand of redneck political humor may not be for everyone, but it's good for what ails most of us.
The "Jackie's Momma" segment is not to be missed!
