"Sometimes comedy isn't pretty, folks." August 10, 2004 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
While casually sipping his gin and dragging on a cigarette, Ron White transports his audience to pure comedic bliss. And like the title of this review, his comedy isn't always pretty, but it's always funny. And I'm not talkin' "chuckle funny." This is "laugh 'til the tears roll down your cheeks" funny. And White's CD DRUNK IN PUBLIC thoroughly showcases this comedian's hilarious talent.
White has a wonderful gift of delivery and timing. He sets up each joke--each punchline--with all the mastery of a wizard at the pinnacle of his craft. Sure, there's profanity, and White discusses and tackles several topics that are less than pleasant, yet his crudeness and vulgarity are merely instruments to his uncanny ability to cut to the chase and deliver an anecdote as efficiently and fluidly as a high performance engine hitting on all cylinders. White doesn't mince words, he doesn't waste time--he goes for the comedic jugular and never lets up.
If you're one of those politically correct types, don't waste your time with this CD. However, if you're looking for some genuinely funny material that's irreverently raunchy and dares to make us look at and laugh at ourselves, pick up DRUNK IN PUBLIC. It's guaranteed to pick you up. --D. Mikels
"Can't ride home on a bowl of goat..." (4.5 stars) June 29, 2004 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
Ron White is a very funny and talented comedian that has a lot of potential, and that potential is very well displayed on his first album, "Drunk in Public." While many were introduced to him through the comedy concert movie, "Blue Collar Comedy Tour," I first heard of him through some of my friends. So, I decided to purchase the CD without hearing the man do a single set. It is a decision that I'm happy I made, because Ron White knows how to show you a good time without breaking a sweat.White talks about a variety of things on his album... most of them involve drinking. Hence the title of the album. Still, he talks about a lot of other things as well. He talks about being married to a "spoiled" wife with rich parents, and how she can't really do anything on her own. He talks about an experience on a small plane where they were uncertain if they would ever see home again... although, Ron didn't really care since he was drinking. A nervous passenger asks him if one of the engines burn out how far will the other one take them, and Ron casually replies, "Right to the crash site." He even bets the man that they'll beat the paramedics there by a half an hour. He talks about his cousin who loves to hunt, and he talks his loathing of Sears. There's many more on the album, but those are just some of the real headliners. I really enjoyed listening to this album. Ron White is a very relaxed comic... so relaxed that he actually drinks and smokes during his routine. His set never feels forced or recycled. He's very subtle and confident about his material, and it really shows. His "relaxed" style really works for his routine and makes him a real standout. The only problem I had with the album is that it's too short. The total running time is a little over 39 minutes long. Usually, comedy routines on albums run about an hour long (sometimes a little less, sometimes even a little more). I was kind of sad that the CD was so short. I remember saying to myself, "That's it?!" It is only a minor complaint, but I still feel that the album could've been a little longer. I'm sure he didn't run out of material. My favorite tracks are "sunglasses," "truth in advertising," "plane crash," "ten days in los angeles," "outlaw video games," "married to a wealthy woman," "lug nut day," and "they call me 'tater salad.'" I like them all, but those are some of my favorites. Ron White's "Drunk in Public" is a very funny first album, and it shows a lot of promise for future achievements. Despite it being a tad short, it's still a very worthy listen. I think that he will really go places if he keeps it up. If you're looking for a funny comedian that is subtle and hilarious, Ron White is your man. Don't forget to enjoy a nice cold one when you pop this bad boy into the stereo. -Michael Crane
Humour at its best.... December 5, 2003 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
As a non-US resident who has never had the chance to see Ron White live, this CD was perfect. I first encountered him through the Blue Collar tour and thought his style of dry humour was the best I have ever heard. When I heard they were releasing a CD of his own, it was like Xmas and I was certainly not disappointed. While some of his material I have heard before (being thrown out of the bar in NYC is the funniest piece of storytelling ever), the new material I heard on this disc blew me away. From the opening piece on the price of sunglasses to his views on his rich in laws and car servicing, you will laugh very, very hard. Its the kind of humour we can all relate to, as it is the stupidity we all encounter every day put into words.
Should have been 5 stars December 29, 2003 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
Tbere are 2 reasons I only give this album 4 stars instead of 5. First is that we already heard about 1/3 to 1/2 of the material on the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour" DVD. Well, at least we get to hear the uncensored, raw, F-bomb dropping comedy instead of the sanitized, Foxworthy-ized comedy. The second reason "Drunk in Public" doesn't get a fifth star has nothing to do with Ron's performance or material. It has to do with the audience. There's a woman in the audience whose laugh seems to be one long whinny, as if she's at the Def Comedy Jam. Owners of the CD know precisely who I'm talking about. She is a major distraction from the enjoyment of the star of the show. If the producers of this album are reading this review, shame on you for not digitally removing her brays from an otherwise brilliant comedy CD. (And if whinny-woman reads this review, shut the hell up next time you loudmouthed harpy!)
"I was drunk in a bar! They threw me into PUBLIC!" June 29, 2004 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Ron White is an incredibly funny and original comedian. Anyone who saw him on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour should certainly attest to that. He rants and raves about all sorts of things in a very interesting fashion. Ron proves that he's not just another typical redneck comedian building off of redneck stereotypes, such as Larry the Cable Guy and Jeff Foxworthy. This is good because he doesn't end up alienating his audience by only telling jokes only Southerners can appreciate. If you already have the "Tater Salad" DVD, don't bother buying this CD, since the DVD has basically all the same comedy and even more. Also, don't bother buying the Blue Collar Comedy Tour if you want to see "more" of Ron since his skit is basically an abridged version of his act with 1 or 2 new things thrown in. He is rather crude at times, but if you're not offended by dirty language then you're bound to have fun. I would not recommend playing this for the first time while driving your car, because odds are you'll be laughing so hard that you're bound to be a driving hazard.
