Amazon.com essential recording Even as greatest hits packages go, this is an utter gem. Every song is inspired, in a class of its own, whether the real version of "I Shot the Sheriff," the hymnlike "No Woman, No Cry," or the sheer joy of "Jamming." Even allowing that Marley never wrote any bad material, then Legend is still the creme de la creme, the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc. He was unique, and the message of this record, more than any other, is that he died far too soon. --Chris Nickson

Legendary Anthology April 9, 2003 53 out of 61 found this review helpful
The Bob Marley collection "Legend" does indeed make its case for Marley as a regge legend. More than any other artist, he helped bring regge music to mainstream audiences with his excellent songwriting and musicianship. He could be political without sounding preachy, and also wrote some of the sweetest love songs of any musical genre. Marley was popularized in America, of course, when Eric Clapton remade his "I Shot the Sheriff." Clapton's version is outstanding, but Marley's is equally so and is the one were the song's subtle political message is more overt.Other outstanding tracks on the collection include the sweet "Three Little Birds," the ace peace and love song "One Love/People Get Ready," the straight up love songs "Is This Love" and "Stir It Up," the political rant of "Buffalo Soldier," the call to arms "Get Up Stand Up" and the rave-up "Jamming." Even among the lesser well known songs there is not a clunker or misstep in the mix. Overall, a superior single disc anthology that establishes Bob Marley as one of the most important musicians of his era.
Why I'm giving Bob one Star? September 17, 2004 25 out of 44 found this review helpful
Imagine a Beatles compilation that only includes songs like: Lady Madonna, hello good bye, Yesterday, obladi oblada, yellow submarine, octopus garden and let it be. That what's Legend is for Bob Marley He was dead when Legend came out and he would have hated it to.
The songs are just a bunch of his most pop and Radio friendly stuff, songs like 3 little birds, Could you be loved or no woman no cry means nothing for the real fun. In Lengend Marley is pictured as a pop artist, who sings mostly love songs, while in reality he had a strong politic and social ideology wich whoever produced this compilation make sure to buried it with songs like 3 little birds or could you be loved.
True Marley is on soul rebel, Rastman Vibartions, Catch a fire. on songs like ambush in the night, running away or sun is shinning. Don't bother with this album.
A True Legend December 30, 2002 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
This man WAS a legend. His music touched millions. He laid the groundwork for a lot of ska and reggae existing today, surviving an assination attempt and a country filled with unrest and confusion in the process. It truly was inspiring. His passing in 1981 was both tragic and untimely. Legend is a Best Of-album of sorts. It has a lot of his radio singles, his big hits, and a few treasures. Recommended to all fans of music, Jamaican music or otherwise. A stepping-stone into eventually collecting all of of his amazing work. Truly it is: "...the heart and soul of the Jamaican people packed into one five-inch compact disc..."Bob Marley's spirit lives on in his music.
Bob Marley lives on in his music; perfect CD to prove it April 21, 2003 19 out of 24 found this review helpful
Bob Marley is a figure that attracts attention from any music lover.Leading and popularizing the entire Reggae genre, Bob Marley's music and persona are larger than life. He tackles themes of inequality and Rastafarian doctrines in his lyrics to energetic, heartfelt songs. The CD opens with "Is this Love", as the bouncing and almost funky guitar make way to Bob Marley's lovely voice. Just a fun song to listen to while chilling. The best part of the song is the verse. "No Woman No Cry" is a live cut, and a change of mood, to soft and poignant. Very simple the whole way through, it's not his best song but an important classic nonetheless. "Could You be Loved" has this amazing energy, a kicking beat. The switch between relative major and minor tonality is an example of Marley's ability to naturally elicit emotion through the music. When he gets to the part "Could You be Loved, and be loved", you are forced to feel it. "Three Little Birds" is a great song to with great harmonies from the ladies. A nice arrangement by Bob, and another great message from Bob. "Buffalo Soldier" is a cool song, one of my favorites. Great instrumentals from the band. "Get Up Stand Up" is a song that describes Bob's answer to much of the injustice in Jamaica and the world. Meaningful and funky, Marley means business. "One Love" is a lasting melody that you've surely heard on resort commercials, such as Sandals. It speaks Carribean. "Shot the Sherrif", covered by Eric Clapton, is a strange song. Original concept. It is one of the most bouncing, so I like it. Bob goes all out vocally as well. Nice vocal effects too. "Waiting in Vain" is cool. Very relaxed. Almost has an American R&B feel to it. Very chill. A nice fadeout at the end. "Redemption Song" is an emotional song with good lyrics. This is a special one. The chorus gives insight into some of Bob's longing. "Satisfy my Soul" is a bit jazzy, but follows the basic Marley songwriting formula. Again, another song from his collection that shows he's a songwriter. "Exodus" reiterates his theme for the progression and equality of his people. Not one of the best songs on the CD, yet a memorable chorus. "Jammin" is one of the best songs on the CD. Pure and beautiful, it's impossible not to feel the rhythm on here. The two bonus tracks are interesting and welcome. Bob's all about simple messages put to very relaxing music. That's what Bob's music is all about, very basic and raw emotion, which makes the music timeless and shouts out "Life".
Jamaican Reggae Party September 8, 2003 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
Here is the least expensive trip to Jamaica that anyone can buy. This CD is one of the *best* Caribbean vacations at a low, low price. The music is mellow and breezy ... the lyrics are simple, but profound. This CD encompasses the *best* and most celebrated songs of this world-famous group from the years 1973 to 1980. Bob Marley & the Wailers catapulted reggae music onto the world charts and there it remains for all time. We are richer for this experience. "No woman no cry" and "Three little birds" were played in Nov. 2002 by a Carribean band on the cruise I took to the Western Carribean. They are classics that I have enjoyed from the past and now, *even* more so with the additional memories of my vacation. "Buffalo Soldier" and "I Shot the Sheriff" are classics forever etched in my mind from frequent air-time, when played on the radio during their hey days ... Other favorites are "Get Up Stand Up", "One Love/People Get Ready" and "Stir It Up". If you want to feel relaxed, care-free, and mellow buy this CD. "Eiree mon" as they say in Jamaica! Go buy it and enjoy!!! Erika Borsos (erikab93)
