Solitude is Not Given--It is Earned June 3, 2004 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This album withstand any attempt to limit it with categorization. Of all DI6's work thus far, this one is essential to put me into a most sinister mood. It is dark and pretty. It is achingly sound aesthetically. The mood is militaristic and liturgical. Perfect for a sacrifice, actually. There are two very long songs that are heavily layered with various samples and instrumentation. These are "The Wall of Sacrifice", which opens the CD at 16 minutes and "Death is A Drummer", the final track on my CD, at 9 minutes. It looks as if there is an extra track on this release, "Heilige Tod". The Players on this album are all worthy accomplices. Along with Douglas, there is Tibet, Rose McDowell, Boyd Rice, Andrea James, Nikolas Schreck and Jan O. All of these folks have done fine work--going back nearly 30 years for some. This CD contains several of Douglas' greatest songs: "Giddy Giddy Carousel", "Fall Apart", and "Hullo Angel". It also has my personal all time favourite, "In Sacrilege" It always puts me in a right terrifying stance. Overall, this CD has some faithfully heavy moments. It is also replete with Douglas's uncompromising poetic vision. It shimmers and decays at once. Play it for your Mother. Maybe she'll be so moved that she'll immediately go out and sign up.
Now, this is dark beauty November 19, 2007 I rarely hand out 5 stars, but this and "But What Ends..." so readily deserve such an honor. Just try to play this and not "fall apart."
