Product Description
Linus is determined to see the great pumpkin on halloween night even if it means missing tricks or treats. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/02/2008 Run time: 128 minutes

Amazon.com
Charlie Brown gets rocks in his trick-or-treat bag, Linus awaits a visitation from the Great Pumpkin in his terribly sincere pumpkin patch (while the adoring little Sally sits tight with him), Snoopy falls asleep, Lucy harasses Schroeder, and Pig-Pen kicks up a dust storm even beneath his costume in this classic television broadcast. Funny stuff, but also graced with Charles Schultz's more poignant and gently satiric themes from the 1960s on the influence of faith, failure, and hope in our lives. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars DON'T BLINK BECAUSE EVERY SECOND IS FANTASTIC!   November 1, 2000

I have grown up watching this movie every Halloween since age 5. Honestly, I've probably watched this video more than any other video I own and I love it EVERY SINGLE TIME--never a dull moment! If you love Schulz, Snoopy, the Peanuts gang and/or Halloween you simply must own this! It deserves the highest possible rating; five stars doesn't do it justice. It has perfect editing, illustrations, music, voices, script--EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS PERFECT! I've done over 70 reviews and I do believe this is the first time I have EVER used the word perfect in one of them!

My favorite scenes are the Snoopy ones, especially the World War 1 Flying Ace (flying doghouse scene with great colors) and the piano scene at the Halloween party where Snoopy dances and marches to the happy song and then changes moods and cries to the sad song..repeating twice. I laugh out loud til I cry every single time! YA GOTTA LOVE SNOOPY! He is so intelligent but sensitive too! What a dog!

My second favorite character in this video is Sally--the way she pitches a fit in the pumpkin patch and says "I was robbed!" then threatens to sue Linus--so hiliarious also! Again it makes me laugh til I cry!

Lucy the bossy and sometimes downright grouchy (to put it mildly) shows a soft side the way she wakes up in the middle of the night, goes to check on Linus and finds his bed empty, then gets dressed and goes to get him freezing in the pumpkin patch and puts him to bed without a word. The ending with Charlie Brown and Linus is endearing as well.

Each character is so unique and entertaining! JUST GET THIS VIDEO! TRULY A TIMELESS CLASSIC! YOU'LL LOVE IT--TRUST ME!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Peanuts   November 2, 2001

I didn't grow up watching this cartoon every year on TV. In fact, I just saw it for the first time last year. However, I liked it immediately because of my love for the Peanuts gang.

There are several story threads, but no one overall story. The gang's plans for Halloween night are interspersed with scenes of Snoopy being a WWI Flying Ace and Charlie Brown trying to kick the football because he has a signed note from Lucy. (Classic line - "It's not notarized.") Charlie Brown cuts too many holes in his ghost sheet, gets rocks in his bag, and becomes a model for a pumpkin face. Meanwhile, Linus and Sally await the Great Pumpkin.

Also on the DVD is You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown. This one follows a more unified story of Linus trying to become student body president. Things are going well, until he starts talking about the Great Pumpkin.

The DVD offers no extra beyond these two classic TV specials. The picture is sharp and the sound is great, however.

This DVD belongs in any Peanuts fan's library.

5 out of 5 stars The #1 Halloween Classic!   November 21, 2002
10 out of 12 found this review helpful

Halloween specials never caught on quite as strongly as the Christmas special over the past few decades, but there was a time when they were something many of us looked forward to annually, and today some of them are now considered just as much classics as their Christmas counterparts. There was the Garfield Halloween special, the live-action specials "The Worst Witch" and "The Halloween That Almost Wasn't" (known as `The Night Dracula Saved the World' on VHS), Bugs Bunny's Halloween Special, "Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Pumpkin Who Couldn't Smile," and a few others. The king of the Halloween specials, of course, was the 1960's classic, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!"

It's Halloween, and everyone is getting ready to go trick or treating, followed by the big Halloween party at Violet's house. Somehow, Charlie Brown has received an invitation too! Everyone is excited! But Linus has different plans. Linus is a firm believer in The Great Pumpkin, Halloween's answer to Santa Claus. It seems that every Halloween Night, the Great Pumpkin flies through the sky in search of the most sincere pumpkin patch around, and when he finds it, the lucky kids who are waiting there for him will get tons of presents and candy! Everyone thinks Linus must be crazy! But Charlie Brown's little sister Sally has a huge crush on Linus and has decided to take a chance on him. She agrees to give up trick or treats and spend the night sitting in the pumpkin patch with Linus waiting for The Great Pumpkin to arrive.

"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," is loads of Halloween fun with our favorite group of sassy comic strip kids. Snoopy performs his legendary WWI reenactments, Lucy is meaner than ever, and Charlie Brown couldn't be Charlie Brownier. Who else could get nothing but rocks when trick or treating? The DVD is great, with a bonus Charlie Brown special to boot! "You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown!" In this special, Linus suggests that Charlie Brown should run for class president, but when Lucy takes a poll, it appears that Linus would have a much better chance. The Peanuts gang immediately sets to work on getting Linus elected, but it seems that the Great Pumpkin will ruin yet another day in Linus' life in the end. It's a fun little special, but nowhere near as wonderful as "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" Pick this one up for the feature presentation, but stick around for the extra!

5 out of 5 stars No Rocks This Year! Great Pumpkin Comes to DVD   August 9, 2000
7 out of 9 found this review helpful

Is this the year that The Great Pumpkin finally makes an appearance? Linus is determined to wait it out in the pumpkin patch for a glimpse of The Great Pumpkin (with adoring Sally by his side). Meanwhile, the rest of the Peanuts gang get dressed for a night of successful trick-or-treating, (successful for all except for poor ol' Charlie "I got a rock" Brown. )

Some choice moments:

Best throwaway moment: Pig-Pen kicking up a dust storm even when he's in costume. Best Scene-Stealer: Sally goes from blind adoration of "her sweet baboo" to sheer disbelief that she has no Halloween candy to show for her troubles. Favourate moment: watch the credits to see Linus shouting at Charlie Brown about how sitting and waiting in a pumpkin patch wasn't stupid!

A timeless classic that is a poignant homage to the true spirit of Halloween and to Charles Schultz himself, who died in May 2000. The DVD even includes a bonus feature: "You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown." Still not all the extras I hope for in a DVD, but I'll take it. Thank you, Charles "Sparky" Schultz.

5 out of 5 stars Come on now, What would Halloween be without Charlie..........   October 3, 2008

Although hundreds of Halloween TV specials bombard us each October with cartoons and shows but this is my personal all-time favorite. Charles Shultz was a visionary artist. He transcends time and race barriers to create these wonderful characters anyone can identify with. This one has it all! Wonderful hand drawn animation with warm watercolor backgrounds that capture the essence of Autumn so vividly along with the terrific scoring by jazz musician Vince Guarldi.

For those of you that already know, I like for you to reminisce with me here but if you don't know you get poor Charlie Brown and his misfortune to always get a rock instead of candy on Halloween night! Linus and his misguided Great Pumpkin worship. Lucy and her mean streak! Sally and her unrequited love. Snoopy and his alter-ego the Red Baron! SO many good memories are made by watching these specials. It's not only the characters of Charlie Brown, Linus and Lucy that keep you in hysterics, but Sally .. she steals the show. She's not only cute and lovable, but can whip out sarcasm with the best of em. I think she can even give Lucy a run for her money!

Now before I continue, is it me or is that moon mighty huge on the pumpkin patch field. I was always at awe every time that scene came up. If you have kids (or are kids at heart) this is a no-brainer. Start (or continue) your Holiday tradition right with "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" today!

Oh, Great Pumpkin--where are you?

Question for those who are enjoying the horror fest this month I need to know "Who is your favorite character and why?" You get a extra treat if your able to answer it. Happy Halloween!
