Amazon.com Take one "everyman" standup comic, add a ridiculously good-looking wife, and throw them into everyday scenarios that are taken to the extreme and you get George Lopez, a pleasant and funny series with a winning formula not unlike that of According to Jim and Everybody Loves Raymond. Starring George Lopez as, well, George Lopez, and Constance Marie as his put-upon wife Angie, the ABC series debuted with a four-episode mini-season in spring 2002. Good ratings and favorable reviews got it picked up for the 2002-2003 season. Both the first and second seasons--totaling 28 episodes--are included on this four-disc set. The show begins with George being promoted from his blue-collar factory job to management. Much of the early episodes concentrate on his happiness at being able to provide for his family, but still not sure where he falls in the us-against-them polarities at work. One of the show's executive producers is actress Sandra Bullock, who has a recurring role as a klutzy colleague with depth perception problems. There are a few bittersweet episodes as George learns that his father--whom he had been told was dead--is actually alive and could be one of his former assembly line co-workers, Lalo (guest star Cheech Marin)--even though Lalo is gay. That the show's writers and cast are able to make this implausible scenario somehow ring true--and funny--is a testament to their talent. The language tracks are in English and Spanish, with Spanish subtitles also included as an option. Fans of the show will notice one major difference between the televised episodes and the DVD version: Instead of War's infectiously catchy "Low Rider" starting each show, the theme has been replaced (due to rights issues) by generic music mixed in with some Lopez quips. All things considered, George Lopez is a refreshing variation on the loving, but blemished, all American family. --Jae-Ha Kim

Disputes Galore, No Peace For George Lopez! April 22, 2008 44 out of 46 found this review helpful
George Lopez is a factory worker in a Plane parts factory in LA who has just been promoted to management. His Cuban wife Angie{played by the stunning Constance Marie}, is the good Samaritan & matriarchal "know it all." His father in-law Victor Palmero{played perfectly by Emiliano Diez}, is the Cardiologist who can't accept that his upper-middle class daughter married a blue-collar man. The kids are hyperemotional Carmen{Masiela Lusha}, & dyslexic Max{Luis Armand Garcia}. George's best friend & co-worker is the sweet, insecure, loveless, Ernesto Cardenas{Valente Rodriguez} Now for the other main character, one truly can't describe George's verbally cruel mom Benita Lopez-Benny{played brilliantly by Belita Moreno}. She is a cross between Godzilla & Roseanne{Roseanne Barr}, without the softness. She works with George, chain smokes, & drinks.
This is a blue-collar Hispanic version of the "Cosby Show" with more laughs. In this show a solution given to a problem at the end of one episode often creates new plots while maintaining the basic themes. You have an array of multiple disputes. Cuban vs. Mexican, white-collar vs. blue-collar, dominant wife{George, end of discussion!} vs. cynical husband{George loses 99% of the time}, daughter vs. son, parents vs. kids, George vs. Victor, & everyone vs. BENNY! Typically, episodes that involve her are the most hilarious. She can walk into a room{George move your big Pumpkin head out of the way, your blocking the TV!}, offend everyone in 30 seconds, & then leave for a "smoke & a beer." George's wounds from his fatherless childhood & neglectful mother are at the heart of the show as he & Benny rehash every battle as they draw all into their mini Armageddons. The first two seasons were not the best, but this show got better every season. Lastly, Sandra Bullock deserves credit for getting this show on TV.
Brilliant and hillarious - a definate must see :-) January 27, 2007 23 out of 25 found this review helpful
I cannot tell you how much I love this show. It's so funny and under-rated. George's humour is so dry and quick and he pulls it off amazingly. I love the banter between him and his mother, and how he talks about his kids to his wife. It's about time that this finally came to dvd. I cannot wait to get my hands on it because I want to see it all again from the beginning. Here in Australia we only get to see it during the early hours of the morning (I guess our networks don't know a good thing when they see it), so I'm also hoping to catch up on the episodes I might have missed, or they cut out of it. For 8 episodes, one of the executive producers was Sandra Bullock and she's responsible for this fantastic show getting off the ground. Do yourself a favour and pick this up when it's released. It's so funny and enjoyable, you're bound to love it as much as I do.
Such a Funny Show May 2, 2007 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
I just finished watching the first two seasons. I laughed so much. There are 28 episodes, the first season being only 4 episodes long. I really enjoyed how the show hit on real life issues but always with funny moments to keep it lighthearted. Also the cast really works well together. If you give the show a chance you will laugh and really enjoy it. I have only watched these DVDs so I can't speak for the rest of the show, but I really enjoyed these first two seasons. I highly recommend you buy/watch this DVD set.
Lopez knows Laughs July 11, 2007 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
The George Lopez show is twenty first century family entertainment at its best. He is the Captain of the house, as long as you do not tell his Cubain born wife Angie. His kids respect him-NOT and his mother Benny...well lets say, she wont win mother of the year anytime soon
Lopez is part in the vein of Desi Arnaz and Part in the vein of Chico (Freddie Prinze SR) of Chico & the Man. He is also the first comic to survive in TV as a latino, since Chico and the man. The humor is dry and rapid. Not just one liners, but heartfelt barbs of family life. Think Roseanne with more heart and better humor
One of my two favorite episodes is George not wanting to celebrate his birthday and his son Max following suit. The end of the episode (SPOILER)is George spending time with his childhood hero. I wont say who that is, that would be a real spoiler. However the last 5 minutes (HINT) will be well KROFTED (note not mispelled) for the kid in all of us.
the second of my two episodes involves accident Amy (played by executive producer Sandra Bullock). She seems to have so much fun pratfalling and ending up in mishap after mishap, while George tries for a 30 day accident free shop.
So if you want family fun with a target on fun. This hits the bullseye on all accounts

Great DVD with one flaw October 30, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I loved the the show from the beginning. George Lopez really tells it like it is and much resembles my own family upbringing. I hope they complete the series with the following seasons. There is one flaw. During each of the beginning credits, why was the song "Low Rider" by War taken out of the beginning credits and replaced with some weird moaning and groaning music. Keep up the good work George!
