4 out of 5 stars Better than FM Transmitter   September 24, 2006

I've tried numerous transmitters for my nano, but this is the best thing I've tried. It has good high and low end, and there is no annoying fm static or noise. I can turn it up high when nothing is playing and ..... silence! Plus, it sets out from your tape player by a couple of inches and swivels, so its easy to access. It uses minimal power, and there is a cig lighter charger if needed for the nano. The only caution....check out what is immediately above your tape player slot and make sure the setup won't block anything. Hold your nano with the bottom lined up with your tape deck slot, and so it is about 1 inch in front of it, and imagine it being about 1 inch taller (extra height needed for the TuneDeck dock). Would anything vital be blocked? My set up (Subaru Forester) blocks access to my heater controls a bit, but I can still operate them by reaching behind, with practice. And my cup holder just barely clears the top of the nano. But terrific sound for the money, and it was perfect for my needs. Recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Read if you have a 2G (2nd Generation) iPod Nano   May 6, 2007

I was so looking forward to using this, and Amazon's description claims it is designed for both 1G and 2G Nanos. I was very disappointed when I received it and my 2G Nano did not fit (the 30-pin connector does not line up). I attached a picture to the customer images to show the problem. If it did fit, I would probably have given it a high rating as I do like the design.

*** UPDATE ***
I decided to contact Belkin since they also say it's OK for 2G Nano. They were quick to respond and said they now have an adapter to accomodate the new 2G Nano and will send it to me free of charge. I received the adapter about a week after Belkin said they would send it, so that was very good service. After removing the clear plastic cradle that's designed to hold the 1G Nano and replacing it with the black cradle for the 2G Nano that they sent me, it is a perfect fit and I'm quite pleased with the Tunedeck now. I have uploaded a picture again showing the new adapter from Belkin.

Unfortunatley I can't change my original 1 star rating, but if I could I'd give it 4 stars now (they lose 1 star for the hassle).

3 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like it...and I do...to a degree.   October 6, 2006

I've been looking for a way to integrate my ipod nano into my car without having to buy a whole new head unit. I've tried FM tuners and didn't really like how my music sounded...also, it was difficult to find a clear FM station in a city such as Los Angeles.

So, the next logical option was the cassette adapter. I first tried the Sony CPA-9C and thought it was great..except for the wire running from the cassette deck to the ipod.

Thus you can see why I was really excited about the TuneDeck and really wanted to like it.

First, the positives:
1) Great design (no wire clutter)
2) Direct line-out through the connector rather than through the 9mm jack
3) When plugged in, ipod automatically pauses when you shut off the car
4) Good lows and highs

The negatives which prevented me from loving it:
1) The actual physical cassette generates a fair amount of noise when playing. The Sony Cassette adapter made no noise at all due to it's "self adjusting spring head" (I think). I normally wouldn't mind, but after having used the silent Sony adapter, I find the noise a bit distracting.

2) The music is a bit distorted. Not being an audiophile, I don't have the words to describe this but it's kind of like when you play loud, bass-filled music on a small speakers that can't handle the bass. But, I have a decent sound system in my car, my EQ is off, the "Soundcheck" option is on, and I'm not playing the music loudly at all. Again, it's not bad to the point of not being able to listen to the music at all...but frankly, I'm a bit puzzled by it ... and quite disappointed.

3) It's quite pricey for a cassette adapter.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea, not well implemented   February 19, 2007

I was pretty excited about this product as I'm not a big fan of the FM transmitters used to play ipods through your car stereo. It is pretty convenient to have an actual dock for the ipod to sit in and the base itself is nice looking. However, there are a few problems:

1. Make sure that your tape player accepts tapes with the tape surface on the right. The base of the ipod connector swivels right and left, but doesn't flip over. So if your tape player only accepts tapes with the magnetic strip on the left, then the only way to get this to work is with your ipod upside down! As far as I can tell this appears to include most Audi automobiles. Don't know if any other manufacturers have this problem.

2. The sound quality does tend to be fairly distorted. Songs with a lot of treble will be borderline painful to listen to. The review describing it as playing a song too loudly through small speakers is probably the best way to describe it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cassette Solution for iPod   August 23, 2007
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Belkin's TuneDeck is a beautifully designed cassette plus holder for the iPod Nano. After much research and testing of various FM Tuners, I decided that the TuneDeck is the best, inexpensive solution for playing your iPod through your car stereo if your car is equipped with a side-loading cassette player.

You simply insert the cassette, place the iPod in the holder, select your tune and enjoy great sound, no static. The iPod holder swivels 180 degrees so you can see the menu while driving. You can run the cassette off the iPod battery, or use the included car battery charger.

My only caution is that you check to make sure that you order the newest TuneDeck that has the adapter for the 2G iPod Nano. The TuneDeck that I purchased was one of the earlier models that did not have the adapter. Belkin support was very good and overnighted the adapter to me, but the new ones should be out by now.
