Alien December 4, 1997 sjp@interaccess.com (U.S.) 33 out of 33 found this review helpful
Readers will be pleased with this book if they are interested with the design of the Alien film not so much the theme of the film or Giger's art. The book is set up in pseudo biographical form that records the chain of events that led up to the production of the Alien film, through the eyes of Giger. While it does contain many of Giger's paintings they are not the center of the book rather than a means of describing film design and offering a contrast between Giger's vision and the outcome of the film. An excellent companion book to a classic film. April 23, 2006 Jerry Dean (Springfield, MO United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Giger's Alien is an excellent companion book to a classic film. It is written from Giger's diaries about his experience on the production of the film. It also has many behind the scene photographs. A very entertaining behind the scenes book about a classic film.
Gigers Alien January 18, 2008 Christopher L. Enghusen (Hanford, CA, USA) This book is a must have for anyone who is a fan of Giger's work or the movie's. Beutiful on all levels.
Giger's Alien is an all inspiring illustration of his genius April 15, 1999 11 out of 18 found this review helpful
When you first open this book, you have to control yourself from shaking and your knees from buckling. Giger's biomechanical Aliens, have what I have come to love the most, from the greatest creator of art and imagination, this force fed, silver spooned world, has ever seen. You won't look at any other art the same, ever again. Welldone H.R. Giger!
Could Have Been Better November 6, 2009 Elvis Zombie (Angola, Indiana USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
As another reviewer pointed out, this book is a wonderful companion piece to the film. If you are interested in the film design process from Giger's point of view, this is your book. My complaint with the book is the lack of attention the book pays to the full grown xenomorph. Don't get me wrong, the book has much about the derelict vessel on LV-426, the "Space Jockey", the egg chamber, and the face hugger. However, it is light on the chestburster (the chestburster only has 2 pages in the book) and the actual adult ALIEN.
Giger didn't even include the panel "Necronomicon IV" from H. R. Giger's Necronomicon which Ridley Scott wanted Giger to base the creature off of. I just don't understand how a book titled Giger's Alien only has 14 pages dedicated to the life size Alien.
Hardcore Alien fans like myself should pick this up. However, if you are just a casual fan of the movie I would't recommend it. You won't learn much more than you would from the special feature documentary of Alien (The Director's Cut).
