whatisalli

your part and our part
alli is a 60mg orlistat capsule. But it's more than just a pill. It's an innovative weight loss program that works with you, not for you. alli can help you lose 50% more weight than dieting alone, but you have to do your part by changing the way you eat.

loose more weight with alli
The alli program starts with your commitment to adopting healthy eating habits. It combines the only FDA approved, over-the-counter weight loss product with an individually tailored support plan to help you achieve gradual and healthy weight loss. When you take alli along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet, you can lose 50% more weight than dieting alone. For example, instead of losing 10 pounds with diet alone, you can lose 15 pounds with the alli program.

alli is safe - it works in your digestive system, not in your heart or brain. It will not cause jitters, sleeplessness, or a racing heart. You can't just try alli - you have to commit to it.

More information can be found at myalli.com, where you can also talk to alli users, registered dietitians, pharmacists, and fitness experts on the alli message board. Or talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or dietitian to help determine if you're ready.

what weight loss to expect
how does it work

alli blocks 25% of the fat you eat
Typically, enzymes in your intestines break down fat from food so your body can absorb the fat. But the active ingredient in alli attaches to some of these enzymes and prevents them from digesting about a quarter of the fat you eat. Because undigested fat can't be absorbed, it passes out of your body instead of turning into calories.

does alli have side effects?
The main side effect occurs when you eat a meal with too much fat while taking alli. If so much fat is blocked that your stool can't absorb it, you might have side effects. Because they are not harmful, we call them "treatment effects." These include loose or more frequent stools, an urgent need to go to the bathroom, or gas with an oily discharge. The excess fat that passes out of your body is in no way harmful. In fact, you may recognize it as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza. Treatment effects can be lessened if you stick to reduced-calorie, low-fat meals that average 15 grams of fat per meal.

important usage information
  • Don't use alli if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have had an organ transplant, or if you are taking cyclosporine.

  • Do not take alli if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in alli capsules.

  • Ask a doctor before using alli if you are taking warfarin.

  • Do not take alli if you are not overweight.

  • You can take up to three alli capsules per day, one with each meal containing fat.

CBS NEWS: All About Alli, The Weight Loss Pill. (WebMD) By now, you have probably seen the commercials or read the direct mail pieces about Alli. They ask if you are ready to commit to a weight loss plan that includes Alli, the over-the-counter version of the FDA-approved fat blocker formerly known as Xenical. FDA APPROVED: The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug product orlistat 60 mg capsule (trade name alli) on February 7, 2007, for over-the-counter marketing as a weight loss aid. Alli is to be used only in conjunction with a weight loss program that includes a reduced calorie diet, a low fat diet, and an exercise program. It is approved for use in adults 18 years and older. A multivitamin should be taken every day when alli is used as part of a weight loss program. Alli works by inhibiting some of the body's absorption of dietary fat. Taken at meal times, it works by blocking the absorption of about 25% of fat in the foods you eat.

3 out of 5 stars The Math Behind Alli   July 9, 2007
184 out of 210 found this review helpful

Alli makes 25% of the fat you consume with your three daily pills indigestible. It also requires that you eat no more than 15 grams of fat at these meals if you want to avoid the "treatment effects". Therefore, Alli eliminates 25% of 45 grams of fat a day (assuming you eat the max), which is 11.25 grams. As there are 9 calories per gram of fat, Alli eliminates 100 calories a day from your diet. In other words, Alli will knock a pound off you every 5 weeks (there are approximately 3500 calories in a pound of fat). That said, there is more to Alli. Its highly publicized "treatment effects" are in fact its greatest asset. If you're looking for a surefire way to curb your fat intake, look no further. Fear of soiling your pants is a powerful motivator!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of smelly gas and some floating fat in the toilet   June 22, 2007

I started taking alli 3 days ago and today was the first time I noticed anything different happening with my body. First, I had to go to the bathroom really bad after my breakfast+alli and there were floating drops of fat. Then, I cannot stop passing really nasty smelling gas, and I'm continuously afraid to pass gas for fear I will pass something more. However, seeing the fat come out kind of makes me happy. Fat is good for you, but I don't mind sending a bit of it down the shute. This experiment is pretty cool so far. And it does make me watch what I eat a little more. But make sure you don't just eat empty carbs now, you still need your complex carbs, your lean meat and your veggies and fruits. That's my goal. I know this is kind of gross, but it's an honest review from someone who is using this pill. I also checked out [...] for info about orlistat before starting. You should do it too. Especially pay attention to metabolism, interactions and adverse events.

4 out of 5 stars It's effective... but oh, the side effects!!!   July 1, 2007

If you're looking for non-surgical ways to lose weight, the best track is FEWER CALORIES & EXERCISE. Eating smaller meals is one way to reduce caloric intake. Eating the same size meals with fewer calories is another. Or, lastly, stop the food that you injest from actually being absorbed by your body.

Alli works on the principle of the latter, by blocking your body's ability to digest injested fat. And, in contrast to a lot of ads you might see on television, IT WORKS! YAY! I really have to congratulate whatever scientists actually figured out how to do this.

Ok, but here's the downside. IT WORKS. Your body doesn't digest the fat, so it just goes through the rest of your digestive tract... and causes all sorts of unpleasant side effects along the way. They're really unpleasant. Seriously. I can't begin to convey how remarkably unpleasant they actually are. No matter what you heard, you will not be prepared. I actually took prescription Orlistat when it came out a few years ago, and, after stopping due to the side effects, I was *still* not prepared when I started Alli again recently.

On the other hand, the side effects give you this great incentive to stay away from the pizza & deep fried chicken!!!

For me, I eat remarkably healthy most of the time. I try and basically eliminate the need for Alli. But every so often, I get dragged to a business/social dinner or have to travel with few healthy food options available to me. In those cases where eating poorly is totally unavoidable, it's really nice to have Alli in my pocket.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be duped by the hype.   June 13, 2007
100 out of 174 found this review helpful

I have never tried Alli, nor will I. But as a nutrition student I've done a bit of research about this ultra-hyped over-the-counter diet drug, and with the ubiquitous marketing campaign happening, I want to propose a few thoughts if you're considering trying it.

First, theoretically, Alli blocks about 25 percent of the fat you eat. So let's use an example where you eat a 1500-calorie diet, and 500 of those calories came from fat. Alli should - and big emphasis on "should" - block about 125 of those calories. Multiply that by 7, and if the drug works, you've saved a whopping 875 calories a week - or a pound. If you're lucky, then, Alli can help you lose a pound a month.

Second, Alli's web site instructs that you should only eat about 15 grams of fat per meal for the drug to be most beneficial. To put that into perspective, that's a little less than 3 oz. of meat per meal. If your meals are that low in fat, and you're choosing healthy protein and carbs with plenty of fiber, and you exercise and take the multi like Alli suggests, you're going to lose weight whether or not you take Alli. So while you might attribute the weight loss to your new diet-drug best friend, in reality you're losing the weight through your own hard work. So congratulate yourself, not Alli.

But I have a feeling many Alli users will, in their efforts to stay low fat, choose high-carbohydrate meals that in fact will stall or hinder weight loss. Particularly for those who have trouble controlling carbs, or are insulin resistant - and that's probably a good many who are reading - staying on the Alli program could be a disaster.

Third, I won't go into graphic detail about what happens if you eat too much fat while taking Alli. Let's just say the fat has to go somewhere, and it isn't pretty. Categorize under the above "disaster."

Fourth, Alli users deprive themselves of important vitamins that, because they're fat soluble, get blocked with the fat from food. Fat is the most misunderstood component of our diets, and manufacturers and drug companies have played into our ignorance by making expensive, flavorless low-fat and fat-free products, not to mention fat-blocking drugs like Alli. Take some time to educate yourself about fat. Some fats are better than others, but without fat we would die. If you choose carefully, fat can be an incredibly healthy component to your diet.

Alli will likely be a big hit, but please take into mind my criticisms (and those of others) before you try this drug. You should know Alli was formerly marketed by GlaxoSmithKline as prescription-only Orlistat. It didn't work so well. So they repackaged it. Don't be duped by the hype. You don't need a diet drug to lose weight.

5 out of 5 stars MORE THAN JUST A PILL   August 2, 2007
63 out of 69 found this review helpful

Well... I almost NEVER leave reviews, but this is important! I've been on the "My Alli Plan" for 5 1/2 weeks and have lost 19 1/2 lbs. You DO have to work the program, it is not magic and not an appetite suppressant. I have lost 65-70 lbs. three times in my life, all on low carbs. Problem is; I can't live the rest of my life with limited carbs, so I have gained it back every time. The solution...with a low calorie and low fat diet, you WILL lose weight and really you can have ANYTHING you want! Just count the grams in your daily allowance.
O.K. about Alli, MORE THAT JUST A PILL, with a purchase you go online and register your product code in your pack. I registered the 90 pill starter pack and I received 90 days of online support, with EVERYTHING you need (as far as tools and information) to follow the plan. If you were to join an online weight loss plan such as Weight Watchers it would cost $65.00 FOR 3 months. So you get that free with ALLI, which is a $65.00 value in itself (which in a way, pays for the pills, mine were $60.00 + tax.). They have a meal planner, a food log, a recipe lookup, a water log, a weekly weigh-in, a calorie and fat counter, an activity log listing calories burned, an automatic tally of what you consume, a weekly plan, with guidance for the next step, and a message forum to talk with others (the buddy system). Sure there is more, but I can't name them all.
All that said, Personally I do NOT space the fat evenly between 3 meals, or limit the fat to the recommended 19 grams per meal, Sometimes I eat 40 grams of the 60 I'm allowed in a day, at 1 meal! I take the pill with the meal, and I have had NO TREATMENT EFFECTS. The only difference in the way I "go" is that I do go every morning after my 1st cup of coffee; it is softer than before, but NEVER runny or uncontrollable; and never an upset stomach or "go cramps".
I think honestly, that the online support plan & useful tools it provides, is worth MORE than the price of the pill. So even if you are one who does not like the pill, for whatever reason...you still get a value with the "My Alli Plan" website.
Furthermore...it teaches you how to follow a plan and what you can eat, and what to substitute for your cravings, that you CAN live with for life.
If you fall off, don't think it's over, get back on! Enjoy, eat healthier, and live long!
Jean
