TOO HECTIC January 28, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the second novel in the new Caballistics, Inc. horror/action series. Originally known as Department Q, a secret department of the British Government who investigated supernatural phenomena, the department was sold to a private company and renamed Caballistics, Inc. The team consists of former priest Mr. Verse, American Hannah Chapter, resident brainiac Jonathan Brand, former SAS soldier Ness, sorcerer Solomon Ravne, and female demoness Jenny Simmons.
After uncovering a secret lab in an abandoned Nazi bunker, the team is attacked in London by a chaotic underworld force that literally reconfigures, in a most unpleasant way, everything it touches. In a desperate attempt to save themselves, Simmons uses dark magic which has been outlawed, creating a breach of the Accord that has been agreed to by the British government and the powers of Hell itself. The group now finds itself on the run from the Rippers, beings from the lower planes who are death manifested in whirling shapes of razor sharp blades. Someone clearly wants the team out of the way and has the resources to do it.
The worst however is yet to come. A legion of golems is discovered deep underneath the streets of London. Created during World War II to defend London from attack, the golems were long ago forgotten about. But now, someone has found the ancient secret to animating the creatures of clay and using them as their own personal shock troops. The Caballistics have to find a way of stopping the golems before they are unleashed and turning London into a war zone.
Better the Devil was a bit of a disappointment after the very strong debut novel, "Hell on Earth." The pace of the book is too hectic as the team jumps from one battle or chase right to the next with barely time for a breather. It came off as if the author, Mike Wild, was merely substituting mindless action for a cohesive plot. I like the concept behind Caballistics and the characters are all nicely developed, but I hope to see the action toned down a bit in the next book in the series and more attention paid to the horror elements

Perfect for collections strong in supernatural fantasy. October 6, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mike Wild's BETTER THAN THE DEVIL tells of a secret department within the British Ministry of Defense which is investigating the supernatural when hard times hit and it's sold off to a private company, becoming Caballistics, Inc. Despite their pact not to use magic, they are forced to do so when attacked in London - and must form alliances with the undead to survive in this fast-paced fantasy perfect for collections strong in supernatural fantasy.
