5 out of 5 stars Move Over Sylvia Browne... A Chilling Psychic Thriller   January 21, 2008

This review refers to "Deadly Vision" by Rick R. Reed

What would it be like to be the harbinger of death? Curse or gift? Cassandra D'Angelo is about to discover things she'd rather not. Single mom of 7 year old Max, Cass faces the pressures of raising her son alone, of living down a reputation for being a bit on the wild side in her younger days(something her mom never lets her forget) and providing a safe environment for him. So when little Max doesn't turn up on time for dinner, Cass panics and searches the small town of Summitville on the banks of the Ohio River. The neighbors always watch out for each other, and nothing really bad ever happens here, but Cass can't help but picture her little guy laying hurt somewhere in the nearby woods waiting for some help. A thunderstorm approaches, but Cass' motherly instincts won't let her stop looking. A crash of thunder and flash of lightning are the last thing Cass hears, as she is struck on the head by a falling tree branch.

Cass awakens 2 days later in a hospital bed. All is well with little Max, but after seeing the picture of the victim of a missing young girl splashed on the small town newspaper, Cass gets a picture of her own. The girl is not just missing, she's dead and Cass' brain flashes on a horrific death. The images don't stop there, and her visions give her the feeling of one very disturbed killer. She tries to warn the police, who can hardly believe her, she can hardly believe herself.

There are families out there who are desperate to know what happened to their children. Cass feels she must tell them. Putting her own well being on the line, she tries to help. Ian, the very deranged psychopath who kills at the whim of 'The Beast" who told him to(shades of Son of Sam) wants to put to put a stop to Cass. And what better way then through her own child? The race against time is on, can Cass save Max from this monster? Will anyone believe her? Can she conjure up the visions needed to find him, or rely solely on her motherly instincts?

It's a heart pounding, page turning ride from the mind of master horror/thriller story teller Rick Reed.
The first chapter, although a bit disturbing in it's content, gives the reader a look at the villain we will be dealing with. Reed's descriptive storytelling chills and sets the tone, but draws the line at not becoming overly graphic in situations that may be all to real. He brings characters to cheer and characters to fear. He draws the reader in and makes them part of the setting as well as the race against time. Everything is tied up neatly at the end - well almost everything - could there be a sequel in the works Mr Reed?

Often when I pick up a book by an Author I like, I sometimes find myself disappointed that the 2nd or 3rd book did not live up to my expectations. Not so with Rick Reed's stories. My expectations are exceeded each time. Each new one is a fresh story and the writing becomes more and more seasoned. This is the third I have read and I always find myself wanting to warn the characters. I am also always so impressed with how he gets into the heads of the characters. I was amazed at how Cass' actions as a worried mother were so real. The other two, if you are looking for some great thrills and chills are IMand In the Blood(see my reviews for book details). You should know that these three stories also deal with gay themes(and in the case of In The Blood - Vampires) and if that is something that would bother you, well, trust me when I say that you'd be missing some great thrillers, and fans should not pass this author by.

So move over Sylvia Browne, Cass D'Angelo is on the job! Another fine thriller from Rick Reed.
Keep an eye on your kids and...enjoy the read....Laurie

P.S. How come psychics never win the lottery?

4 out of 5 stars Reed's New Vision...A Nice Outlook   January 24, 2008

Having been a Rick Reed fan since "Face Without a Heart," his latest book Deadly Vision was a must read for me! I loved the Amazon Shorts that started this story and have read them again and again. Finally seeing the entire work in print was great!

Like a lot of mediums, Cass D'Angelo, DV's lead character, is struck on the head and awakes with psychic powers. Sylvia Browne, Lisa Williams, Allison Dubois, Christine Hamlett, Jackie Dennison...the television and the bookstore are both cluttered with mediums and psychics these days. What makes Reed's latest book any different? It's the author's craft to mold a gripping tale for his reader. Reed knows his audience. He knows how to entertain and keep us reading.

My only disappointment in this plot was the bad guys. Ian and Myra are two twisted villains out kidnapping girls and praying to "the Beast." I have to admit they weren't my favorite Reed bad guys, but they didn't distract me from being engrossed in the book. Most of Reed's work takes us into the mind of the killer, a very haunting place to be. Deadly Vision is a fresh outlook from the author though, taking us into the mind of the hero instead making this a fresh new territory for the author after such success with his book IM. I certainly hope to see more of this and definitely more of Cass too.

Not since Thomas Harris's Silence of the Lambs have I read a book that plays upon setting so strongly. Harris uses the mysterious Midwest almost like another gripping character. The reader is right on the banks of the Ohio River with Buffalo Bill when he dumps a body. Intentional or not, Reed is a pure genius when it comes to his Ohio setting in Deadly Vision. The sound of chirping crickets, the stink of fish, the muddy river, the soft bank, a moldy body...I particularly enjoyed how setting is such a significant part of these character's lives.

The lesbianic romance of the book is not distracting at all. I'm usually not a fan of lesbian fiction, but knowing about it up front here did not discourage my read. Deadly Vision is a fast paced thriller that doesn't disappoint! I predict you will be hooked!

4 out of 5 stars A Superb Storyteller Delivers Again   January 28, 2008

Summitville is the typical All-American small town: a hard-working populace, local diner with great burgers & fries, friendly faces on every street. That's why it surprises everyone when local youth begin to disappear without a trace; the sudden emergence of an evil presence among them quickly alarms the unsuspecting townfolk and disrupts the burg's overall sense of calm and peace.

One of those unsuspecting folk: Cass D'Angelo, diligent single mother struggling to provide for her seven year-old son, Max. When Max wanders away from home one night, Cass ventures out to retrieve him, but the sudden onset of a raging thunderstorm soon lands her in the hospital - thanks to a blow to the head from a tree branch struck by lightning, rendering her unconscious. When she awakens, Cass becomes aware of a new gift: the ability to receive visions of people, places, and things, combined to form deadly scenarios of what could be.

Shortly thereafter, her visions begin to assist in the discovery of the whereabouts of the abducted children; however, when her newfound ability draws the unwanted attention of the sinister parties responsible for the abductions, Cass is left to wonder if the visions are less a blessing and more a curse - especially when they ultimately endanger both her and Max's lives.

A superb storyteller of suspenseful tales, Rick Reed delivers again with Deadly Vision. In what has become his signature, unique style, Reed presents a fast-paced, action-packed page-turner, and even manages to poke subtle fun at small-town politics along the way. Interweaving drama, wit, and intrigue, Deadly Vision is an entertaining read from a proven scribe with increasingly impressive literary credentials.

An engaging tome, Deadly Vision will surely satisfy Reed's expansive base of readers, and is likely to add quite a few more names to the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars Lock Your Doors   January 30, 2008

Reed, Rick R. "Deadly Vision", Regal Crest, 2008.
Lock Your Doors

I don't know how Rick Reed does it. He seems to write a good book every few months. In fact he writes books as quickly as I write reviews and I am jealous of him. Everything that I have read by him has been a great read. "Deadly Vision" is no exception. It has that kind of suspense that Reed writes so well. Here is a book that catches you on the first page and will not let you go even after you close the covers.
Cass D'Angelo is a single mom living in a small town in Ohio. When a thunderstorm comes to her town, her life changes forever. Her seven year old son, Max, is missing and she must go and look for him. The weather is so bad that when lightning hits a branch of a tree, it falls on her head and she is knocked unconscious. After two days of unconsciousness she awakens and is able to know the deepest secrets of those people around her. She even manages to see the terrible fate of three missing teenaged girls.
Cass finds herself in the middle of a brand new life and people acting differently towards her. The press sees her as a pop celebrity and the police want to ask her a few questions. Those responsible for the deaths of the three girls want to know how Cass knew where the girls' grave was Feeling alone in the world, Cass makes friends with Dani Westwood, a reporter. As the two women begin to investigate the disapprearances and murders of the three girls, a romance develops between the two women. Then Max disappears again and Cass realizes that saving him entails running against time.
The suspense is so thick that at times it hurts yet it is impossible to stop reading. Reed writes horror fiction that can cause readers to have sleepless nights.
Reed also is able to build characters that are totally real and believable. I also began to wonder about the nature of people who consider themselves to be psychic and whether being able to see things that others can't is really a gift or a punishment. I love books that give me food for thought and "Deadly Vision" certainly does. It is also not the kind of book that Reed usually writes and the relationship between the women is handles both beautifully and with subliminal desire.
I strongly recommend this book but I warn you that it is one that will jar you. Read t during the day so that you are constantly aware of your surroundings. One of the blurbs on the cover says that the book "makes a reader double check the door locks and windows". I could not put it any better.
