 Not as Good as Mouse/Cookie October 3, 2008

We love the "If You Give..." books at our house. Our 2 1/2 year old will sit through "Mouse Cookies & More" which has "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie", "If You Give a Pig a Pancake", "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" & "If You Take a Mouse to School" all in one, and then she'll want to read it all over again.
We were very excited to get a new "If You Give..." book, especially one about a cat (our daughter's favorite animal); but I found this story to be less charming than the others. Some of the transitions felt forced; for example, Cat goes to the gym and then suddenly wants to go to the park - I didn't get the connection so the book just didn't flow as well as the others I've read.
This is not to say my little girl isn't completely captivated by the book. We've had it less than a day and have read it through several times (we had to stop because of dinner and bedtime or we'd probably still be reading it!).
So, overall the story is cute and sweet, just like the others, but "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is still my favorite.

My two older daughters are infatuated with the series Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3). They have all three books from the series and cannot wait for more to come. The most recent addition to the collection was Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World. Following the girls infatuation with the cats I bought "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" for my almost three years old son. Unfortunately the magic did not work. My son had some passing interest in the illustrations but did not care much about the story... Since he is not able to write a review I decided to do it on his behalf.
I must say that I am disappointed by the fact that this book was practically a waste of money when my son is concerned, especially that I found it rather expensive. I think publishers should find a way of making books more affordable for parents on a low budget, especially when small kids are concerned. Maybe hardcover is not such a good idea for small kids after all... "Why Some Cats are Rascals" are paperback and for that reason much more affordable. On a positive side I find the illustrations in "If you Give a Cat..." indeed very appealing.

If you give a boy a book, he'll ask you to read it. When you finish, he'll ask you to read it again. Soon he will have it memorized and ask if he can read it to you. You will say yes and be rewarded with the rare perfect moment.

Laura Numeroff's latest addition to her "If You Give..." series is absolutely adorable. Her adventure-loving cat gets to amuse himself at the beach, at the gym (even doing karate!), on a merry-go-road, and with that kid-favorite, dinosaurs (at a museum). This is a sweet, silly, fun book, and Felicia Bond's illustrations are more than just the frosting on the cupcake. I especially liked the treadmill and weights. And yes, I'm biased because I think cupcakes are the most adorable dessert ever, but I can safely say that this book does the dessert and the story justice in a way that kids (and kid-like adults) are sure to enjoy.

My kids love this whole series starting with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. They are so cute and silly. Great illustrations and fun to read. Our favorites are Give a Mouse a Cookie and Give a Moose a Muffin, but the cat and her cupcake are a nice addition to round out our collection.
