Falls a little short November 25, 2003 90 out of 94 found this review helpful
I ordered this volume anticipating that it would be as interesting as it's sister volume "The Most Scenic Drives in America" which I would recomend highly. "Off the Beaten Track" would be of interest to someone who perhaps hadn't done as much domestic travel as we have. For someone who's looking for a guide for unique sights and items off the beaten track I would recomend "Road Trip USA" by Jamie Jensen as a more valuable and interesting resource in this regard. It's typical Reader's Digest high quality printing and presentation with just a bit too "plain vanilla" content for this traveler.

We have a motor home and love finding out of the way places. This is a great resource that we have used often. Unfortunately we tried to use it in 1999 and several of the "places" no longer exhisted. Because they are off the beaten path, we had traveled many miles off our route to our disappointment. We wish a revised edition was available
Excellent book for those who love to explore America. August 31, 1999 59 out of 59 found this review helpful
This book is indispensable for those wanting scenic, out-of-the-way places that are (for the most part) not major tourist attractions. In my 6-week cross-country trip, this book was extremely helpful in finding the best routes and the places with the least crowds. If you like discovering small-town America and beautiful places few of your friends can say they've seen, this book is for you. I love the national parks and other major attractions, but also want to find the interesting places where the crowds don't gather. This book helped me do that. It's a must for those who love to travel and explore.

This is an excellent travelogue with hundreds of pictures in full color. The lithography is spectacular. Over 1000 scenic places are fully described and many are depicted. For instance, the Ute Indian Museum is shown. The famous Taughanock Falls State Park of Ithaca is shown in full color. The National Bottle Museum is shown and fully described. This book would be excellent for a history or geography project in early or middle school.

This book is an excellent source for out-of-the-way vacation spots. While most of the sites listed may not be the ultimate destination, these are gret sites to visit along the way. Each state has at least 8-10 places listed so the book gives many good day trip ideas as well. Besides being a travel guide, this book is fun reading. Descriptions of each spot and occasional pictures make this a good cure for cabin fever on a cold winter's night.
