Antique Paisley Shawl Scarfs Stole in Black with Embroidery on Border. Kashmir has been famous for these paisley shawls for many centuries. In the eighteenth century they had become so famous that merchants from all over the world used to come to Kashmir to purchase them. Antique looking paisley design wool shawls have an all over pattern originally used in making the jama, the coat worn by men. They are woven on a frame loom called tooji, which have woolen thread colors attached to them. The master weaver and his helper use written instructions known as talim to weave the shawls. The talim indicates the color and number of warp threads to be covered. The weaver throws the weft across and after that he calls out the design on the basis of which the different colored threads are woven in. According to Microcroft's long list of trade fabrics, there are an infinite number of designs met with in the paisley, but he describes only three. The main two are rega-buta and kirkh-buties. Rega-buta involves small flower motifs, while kirkh-buties have large flower motifs. The third involves jaldars, patterns that assume net like forms. All these motifs are a repeat of the patterns described in literature and noticed in the eighteenth nineteenth century miniature paintings and costumes.

Absolutely beautiful! I was so happy when it arrived. Not only is it elegant and unique, it is practical. It's perfect in the evenings or at work. It's a great way to keep warm without the bulky and boring sweaters. The square shape is perfect around the shoulders or neck. The pattern is stunning and incredibly soft! No itching! I love it!
